I personally found this novel to be charming and funny. It has a dark edge but on the whole is a romantic comedy that is not embarrasingly twee or dull.

Eh. I was primed for a great book because of all of the fawning publicity and reviews, but I found it to be just so-so. Great voice -- Walker does capture the viewpoint of an 11-year-old girl perfectly -- but far too long for the plot and just not as profound as the writer clearly wanted it to be. Would have been a good short story but one of the best books of the year? Not even the best book I've read in the last two weeks.Eh. This is a novel of grace in several ways -- it is gracefully written, with an engaging style... but it also has some of the loveliest scenes ABOUT grace that I've ever seen in a novel.

A great first novel, with promise for greater efforts later. (I can't wait until her newest work, "Gone Girl", comes out!) You can see some of the seams in the writing (especially the overrushed ending), but overall, a satisfyingly dark and enjoyably chilling read.A great first novel, with promise for greater efforts later. One of the greatest characters (and characterization) of the last 10+ years. I didn't always like Olive (she could be quite unlikable), but I did always feel like she was completely real, warts and all.

Enjoyable, but not her best. For me, it was a book to skim and dip into, not swim in its depths and re-read, as with Operating Instructions.

I was pretty sure I wouldn't like this book, but I thought I'd at least read a few pages so I wouldn't feel too guilty turning it back in unread. An awesome thing happened in the first page -- Patrick DeWitt absolutely captured me and I tumbled through this lovely, weird, violent, unbelievably intelligent and heartfelt story in just a few days.I was pretty sure I wouldn't like this book, but I thought I'd at least read a few pages so I wouldn't feel too guilty turning it back in unread. One of my favorites of the year! Charming, witty, and highly original... a romantic comedy that doesn't forget family and friendships and other important "attachments" in our lives.
