A one-night stand develops into a weekend-long idyll for two very different young men in the English Midlands, in an emotionally naked film that's both a snapshot of the complexities of contemporary gay living, and a portrait of a love affair.

The director's '45 Years' is easier to take for those who grew up thinking the sexual revolution was about new freedoms for heterosexuals. What might link the two films is the attention to character. I might be the type that falls for films that humanize its characters, in spite of the fact that initial reaction to them might be dismissive. When you can hold with it, you might find the humanity there. He has taken a bit of a chance here in portraying quite a bit of drug use along with his sex scenes and friend and family get togethers. He's defended that by saying these drug incidents result from special occasions and shouldn't be taken as central to the lives of his characters. On the extra material he echos the thought once expressed by playwright Edward Albee: a reluctance to be classified as 'a gay filmmaker'; he's gay, and he's a filmmaker.

Warning: I share the impression expressed here that deciphering this particular English dialect will likely be hit and miss. I did not locate subtitles, but someone here indicates they are there, though there is still difficulty. Could keep you from missing something that might seem important at the moment.

Very English. Even with subtitles is often difficult to understand. Does not match American experience very closely, and is in reality quite foreign to Americans.
I never understood the point of the movie.
Very unhappy with all the depictions of cocaine use as a harmless pastime.

Weekend is one of those rare films that combine incredible film making with excellent acting and a storyline and dialog that are as good as a well crafted novel. An unusually frank and funny story about two people who think they've got themselves and life mostly sorted out beginning to discover that their views of love and the world and their behavior are just coping mechanisms to get through life.

As the story evolves and the main characters reveal more of themselves you begin looking back on what you've already seen in the film and realize the reasons they did something or live a certain way.

That may sound dry and clinical but Weekend has some of the best dialog I've seen in a film in years. And more importantly that dialog is delivered with incredible acting skills by the two main leads, it feels like two people actually talking.

Truly fantastic and worth viewing by anyone who likes excellent independent film.

Outstanding! Worth four stars. The director has portrayed a gay couple in the right light. I learned a lot, and enjoyed the affair the two men have over the weekend. The explicit gay sex is accurate, and enhanced the movie. Well done. I also encourage anyone viewing this movie to also view the additional items by the director - it truly added to the movie. I watched the film again after viewing the additional content.
