"Get up! Everybody's gonna move their feet! Get down! Everybody's gonna leave their seat."
A remastered version of 1976's "Destroyer," often considered the best KISS album, not that that means much. I remember thinking KISS was scary when I was a kid and had heard the rumor that their name stood for "Knights in Satan's Service." Years later I heard them and was shocked. Contrary to their blood-soaked, fire-breathing image, they were a pop band. And not even a very good one. Yet millions of people have bought their shtick and whoever came up with the whole make-up, costumes, and stage show bit was some kind of twisted genius. I mean, have you seen them without make-up? Yikes. Critically reviled in their time, they were and remain enormously and astoundingly popular. This was a band whose four members all released solo albums. Yeah, they were terrible, but even the Beatles didn't do that. They became kinda cool in the early 90s, but that still doesn't make them any good and Gene Simmons is proud to be one of the biggest a**holes in rock (he even called one of his albums that). This album does highlight their ability to do both idiotic anthem rock ("Detroit Rock City") and schlock ballads ("Beth"). Producer Bob Ezrin, who also worked with Alice Cooper, supervised the reissue and also contributed liner notes. You'll probably want to pick up "Love Gun" while you're at it. And, yes, love gun is exactly what you think it is. Klassy.
