I hadn't heard of Wayne Koestenbaum until reading Maggie Nelson's "The Argonauts," which featured a blurb from him and they share both a style and a intellectual restlessness. Koestenbaum has written criticism, poetry, and novels, but, I'll be honest, I started with this collection because of the Debbie Harry photograph on the cover, which was taken by Andy Warhol. Koestenbaum's wide-ranging and cerebral essays cover Lana Turner, Cindy Sherman, Susan Sontag (a big influence), Roberto Bolano, porn, poetry, and, of course, the 1980s. My 1980s had far less sex and art and cocaine in it. He shares with us (More like overshares!) "Sometime in the mid-eighties I stopped swallowing cum." Well, I stopped wetting the bed, so there.
