I enjoyed U-571. For a 17 year old film it looks current -- and the viewer gets to see certain actors early in their careers along with Bill Paxton (RIP) and the one actor in the film who had been military Harvey Keitel (USMC). The pace of the film is spot on, the tempo of action and exposition is spot on, and the sub battle strategy is clear to understand. Like sub films? Watch U-571!

This is a 2000 French-American WWII-wartime drama directed by Jonathan Mostow.
A German submarine is boarded in 1942 by disguised United States Navy submariners seeking to capture her Enigma cipher machine.
Although the film appears like a series of real events, British personnel from HMS Bulldog first captured a naval Enigma machine from U-110 in the North Atlantic in May 1941---months before the United States had even entered the war.
The real U-571 was never involved in any such events, was not captured.
It sank in January 1944, off Ireland, by a Short Sunderland flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.
In any case, the film turns out a thrilling, suspenseful and extremely taut-and-kinetic piece that would keep you at the edge of your seat from beginning to end!

Enigma, why risk mens lives for such a machine? We didn't have any math scientist who could understand how to decipher it. Alan from London did go to the United States about that time but he already broke the code. We didn't need the enigma machine at all.

Fact of the matter is that it was the British that recovered the Enigma Machine... not the American re-write of history that Hollywood puts out.

Rated 8/10. Good show. Lots of tension. Authentic.

Great authentic historially accurate production values,.. but one of the enlisted sailor's cowardly and defiant back-talk felt unrealistic, and dramaticly contrived.

b o o m....B o o m.....B O o m....B O O m.....B O O O O O M. WARNING!!!!THIS MOVIE CONTAINS SERIOUS EXPLOSIONS AND MAY DAMAGE YOUR APARTMENT!!!! Ha,ha,ha. I could not believe the sound of the depth charges in this movie. AMAZING!!! There are 3 scenes with depth charges but it's the 2nd one that "Sound Freaks" approval. I insist you watch this on your HOMETHEATER! To be fair this is a good movie with a good story. There's gunplay, explosions, and good action to keep you entertained. BUT!!!! THE DEPTH CHARGE SCENES ARE OFF THE HOOK!!!! It's one of the few times i looked around to see if any thing had moved in my apartment from the explosions. My subwoofers and speakers ROCKED!!! Audio freaks will love this. I give this movie 5 stars!!!!! For amazing explosions, very good story, good cast, and BOOM!!! Ham,turkey and cheese hero with mayo, lettuce, tomatos, and a thick shake.
