Mailer's first book "The Naked and the Dead" (misleading title btw) was a Big book about a Big subject (WW2) and established the young writer as a talent to be reckoned with. He struggled to duplicate that with his next two books, "Barbary Shore" and "The Deer Park," which is his Hollywood novel. He gave up writing novels for a while after they both did poorly. "Barbary Shore" feels like his attempt to write a gritty, urban social novel and it's mostly a failure, but interesting compared to his other books.
