In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and fifteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan's father is the world's most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his sixteenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch -- or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust -- not even family, not even the girl he loves? In the tradition of Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak, Half Bad is a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive, a story that will grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page.

"We all have certain preconceptions of Black witches and White witches, but I conceived of a more nuanced society where all is not what it seems; in fact, the witchy aspects are actually quite minimal – and there are absolutely no wands." ----- Quotation by Sally Green from her March 5,... Amazing book!
and very well written. I can hardly wait to get the second book in the trilogy. Stories about witches are pretty common, but this premise is totally original & held me spellbound.
Excellent read - well rounded characters - excellent story line

Nathan's experience as a "half code" - half white witch, half black witch - is horrific in a world of extreme prejudice where he is subjected to various forms of torture. He makes a compelling and very sympathetic narrator. A dark alternative for fans of Harry Potter books.

The Half bad series if by far my most favorite book.
Going on to the second novel, it was simple breathtaking how the love story element takes a sharp turn into the LGTB comunity.

Simply a work of art. Keep on reading the series, for sure, it just keeps on getting better!

A thought that keeps coming back, is that this would be the "what if Hogwarts didn't exist" the wizards and witches would definitely be a reality like this book.

I unfortunately didn't, and couldn't see what people have seen in this book. The story was alright for the most part, but I guess that Half Bad just wasn't for me.

A powerful, captivating story, Green really manages to keep readers eager and excited throughout the whole book with it's twists and turns, and all the romantic feelings added in.

Fantastic book and so very different than most other teen fantasy/fiction novels out there, both in content but even more so in writing style. Definitely check this one out!

This book made me shiver so many times, and in a good way. The author is so creative, and I love the way she used the 'black and white' as a symbol for the things that still happen all around us. I can't wait to read the second book!

Thought this was an amazing book! It also really brings to light the racism that is going on still today. The author was really quite clever to use the "Black and White" ratio in her writing. I thought this book was a real eye opener and I hope that she uses her writing to prove that something good can come out of a situation so bad. Can't wait for the next book!

A great book to introduce the possibility that you don't have to be a girl to be a witch. A boy, Nathan, has mixed parents and he is trying to find out weather he is a witch or wizard. This novel may be about magic, but it opens the door for discussion about gender identity and prejudice. The first book is great!
