Heroes Are My Weakness
" He's a reclusive writer whose imagination creates chilling horror novels. She's a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids' puppet shows. Annie Hewitt has arrived on Peregrine Island in the middle of a snowstorm and at the end of her resources. She's broke, dispirited, but not quite ready to give up. Her red suitcases hold the puppets she uses to make her living, the romantic novels she loves, and a little bit of courage--all she has left. Annie couldn't be more ill prepared for what she finds when she reaches Moonraker Cottage or for the man who dwells in Harp House, the mysterious mansion that hovers above the cottage from a windblown cliff. When she was a teenager, he betrayed her in a way she can never forget or forgive. Now they're trapped together on a frozen island along with a lonely widow, a mute little girl, and townspeople who don't know how to mind their own business. Is he the villain she remembers or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes. It's going to be a long, hot winter

Author Recommendation

I did not enjoy this book at all. I have read all SEP's other books and loved them, but this one was so hard to get into, I simply gave up and moved on to another author. Not one of her better books, that's for sure.

While I enjoyed the beginning of this book, about halfway through it descended into a mire of cliche and contrivance from which there was no escape. I mean, what I enjoyed was cliche enough - the mystery of Theo Harp's past with Annie and his twin sister Regan that gave the book a kind of old-school gothic feel. But, as is the case in a lot of romances, the need to push the characters into bed together killed all the narrative tension and ended up introducing a whole bunch of contrived moments to show how hot and awesome Theo is.

It was very hard for me to get into the story..it was entirely different from all the books I've read by SEP. It has its moments but I was totally bored by it.

I enjoyed this love story, but this was definitely different than a normal SEP novel in that it was darker and did not have as much of the LOL moments, as well as that I didn't feel like there was as much detail or a "full-story" as her previous novels have had. I would have given it about a 3.5 but THEN the "declaration of love" came and it was just so perfect, I bumped it up to a 4.

While both a little darker (a near drowning, mysterious break ins), and a little more ridiculous (a puppeteer?!) than previous Phillips books, the development of the relationship between Annie and Theo is nevertheless an enjoyable read.
