This book was well thought, and enjoyable. I didn't love the fictional parts, and the "choose your own adventure" type fell really flat. However, I gave it 5 Stars, due to the fact that it was so enjoyable overall...those lame moments don't affect the actual enjoyment of the true stories Neil Shares.

Fun book with a lot of interesting behind the scenes glimpses into Neil Patrick Harris' life. Since it's narrated by the author, it's an absolute joy to listen to!

How does an autobiography wrapped in a choose-your-own-adventure translate to audio? Really well. It's a funny book with surprising bits of heart and surprisingly interesting tidbits about the actual making of movies and TV (such as when he describes the process of being tickled by a smurf). Harris has a dynamic voice and the production often enhances the story.

Write a memoir telling tales of your television and theatre career but write it in the "choose your own adventure" style books that you loved in childhood. But, wait there's more! Now adapt those stories into audiobook format, narrating the story and even including clips from your Tony acceptance speech - Challenge Accepted!

I really enjoyed the stories. NPH is a natural storyteller and it was fantastic to hear about how he came to be where he is today. I also loved all of the added things on the audiobook version. However, the format was the biggest issue for me. The second person narrative--known in the Choose Your Own Adventure books--was very impersonal for an autobiography. I didn't think it worked well and it made NPH seem distant from the personal stories, which made it hard to connect to. Additionally, the audiobook forces you to listen to every part of it, so all of the "untimely deaths" and "magic tricks" I just skipped over because I felt they were a waste of time.

That being said, the stories were the best part. His time on HIMYM, Dougie, Harold and Kumar, along with all of his theatrical endeavors were great. I particularly enjoyed how he met David and their struggle with surrogacy and the parts about their family. It was a great autobiography, just told in the wrong format.

This was, to put it simply, fun. While I'm sure the book's novelty choose your own adventure element was great, I think NPH's narration just gave it the extra boost of enjoyment. It's full of wit and snark, as to be expected. It's also thoughtful and just a bit sappy. (I should check our download to see if we have access to any of the PDFs with David's recipes - I definitely want to try those!)

Okay, the audio version is worth it for the Totally Straight Guy magazine interview alone. I laughed for about 5 minutes at that.

NPH narrates this himself, and of course it's delightful. There are tons of behind-the-scenes anecdotes from his years in Hollywood and on Broadway, and a star-studded list of secondary characters provides support. Overall, though, NPH comes across as, very simply, human (albeit a very talented human).

Highly recommended. Well worth a listen!

I am much to linear a thinker to enjoy this. I've never done well with choose your own adventure books. Still, I did learn an interesting new word on p. 16 "importantlier." I am clearly the wrong generation.

I guess I am just getting to old. I didn't find this choose your own adventure to be exciting. It was just a boring read. Nothing new or interesting that I didn't already know being a fan in the 1990's.

If you need something good to listen to on the commute to work, a fun listen while tanning poolside, or are just interested in the life of NPH then give this audio version a go. Or the actual physical or ebook. It's your choice. Believe me, you will laugh out loud and be entertained.
