Gretta has no choice but to search for her sons and her husband, leading her to the doorstep of a woman who seems intent on making Ulysses her own. Meanwhile, the boys find that the closer they come to Ulysses trail, the greater the perils that confront them, until each is faced with a choice about whom he will defend, and who he will become.
In 1886, Gretta Pope wakes one morning to discover that her husband is gone. Ulysses Pope has left his family behind on the far edge of Minnesotas western prairie with only the briefest of notes and no explanation for why he left or where hes headed. It doesnt take long for Grettas young sons, Eli and Danny, to set off after him, following the scant clues they can find, jumping trains to get where they need to go, and ending up in the rugged badlands of Montana.

This is one of the most contrived and tedious works our book group has ever selected. The author, rather than moving the story along, fills the pages with irrelevant descriptions of everything. It's as though the author spent months writing descriptions of the environment, several weeks of writing vignettes, tried a couple of short stories, and then threw it all in together. A waste of time.

Lyrical writing, complex family relationships and a moral crisis make this story of the American West a modern classic. A father, wife and 2 young boys make their own journeys across the same landscape, meeting many memorable characters along the way. And it turns out that some of those characters were actual people who figured in the very real historical events. One of the best of 2014!

Richly descriptive, loved the characters, very well done historical fiction.

Set against the backdrop of the American West, this book is about one man's all-consuming quest for redemption and how it affects his wife and two sons. The writing is lovely - a good read.
