I don't know about you, but I never tire of well-written future-dystopias. Newman creates a believable and moving world in which everyone over the age of 19 or 20 succumbs to an illness known only as WAKS.
Ice Cream Star, a fifteen-year-old whose 18-year-old brother has started showing signs of the plague, hears of a rumor that there could be a cure... Mostly set in the northeast US, this new world of religion and violence and adolescent feeling remains engaging from start to finish.

Dialect was off putting. Mark Twain, she's not.

A true linguistic and literary masterpiece. Best book I have read in a very long time! Sandra Newman uses her knowledge of human culture, history, sociology, sociolinguistics, war, religion and interpersonal relationships to bring us a very believable future world. I can't wait for the sequel.

I liked this book but struggles with the written format. I had to read many of the sentences more than once to get the meaning.

The dialect of this book didn't hinder my enjoyment of it (although it helps to know a little French), and the heroine is unforgettable. Well worth the effort.

The cover pull-quote seemed to suggest that Ms. Newman is attempting to do something linguistically akin to David Mitchell in Cloud Atlas, however, the speaking style did not work for me. In this post-apocalyptic existence the primary casualty of the Posies seemed to be verb conjugation.
