As it turns out, a dead man can tell stories ... Murders are a dime a dozen in Margaret Thatcher's London, and when it comes to the brutal killing of a middle-aged alcoholic found dumped outside of town, Scotland Yard has more important cases to deal with. Instead it's a job for the Department of Unexplained Deaths and its head Detective Sergeant. With only a box of cassette-tape diaries as evidence the rogue detective has no choice but to listen to the haunting voice of the victim for clues to his gruesome end. The first book in Derek Raymond's acclaimed Factory Series is an unflinching yet deeply compassionate portrait of a city plagued by poverty and perversion, and a policeman who may be the only one who cares about the 'people who don't matter and who never did.

The author is in love with his characters. I gave up halfway through, bored by Staniland tapes and writings, unable to believe a police sergeant could devote so much time to this victim.

I am hardly an expert on mystery novels, but I read this because of the hype, but while it is certainly VERY well written with a very nicely done victim, the noir narrator is too much of a boy scout, moving through the traditionally grimy, nasty urban world of London. This in no way reinvents noir, even if it adds to it a bit. Had it been written in 1954 that would be another story, but as is it's just a well written noir mystery. If I read another one it will be quite a way down the road.

I had high hope about this book. All the hype around it drove me to that conclusion. Error. The first half was okay, just. The last part just lost it. It’s as if the author drew a blank as to how to conclude the book. It’s just too laughable. I’m very disappointed by this first “ Factory” book. Hope the sequels get there act together.

A murder is just the most extreme expression of the darkness that lies within us all.

Noir in all the right ways.
