But when kidnappers manage to reach Sofia, murdering two of her companions in the process, Pitt learns that the message the lovely evangelist was meant to deliver was far more urgent than he knew. With his career on the line, he races to unravel the truth behind Sofia's disappearance, enlisting the help of his beloved wife Charlotte and his old friend Victor Narraway. And he soon realizes that if he cannot find Sofia before it's too late, the consequences could destroy not only his reputation, but the British empire itself"-- Provided by publisher.

This was a complicated story but I enjoyed it. About murder, politics, and a religious cult. Very exciting ending and you don't find out " who done it" until the last few pages.

I'm a long time Perry fan, but this story wasn't worth reading. Between the politics and religion, there was "no there, there".

I did not like this story. The Pitt mystery series is usually a solid fun read but this fell way short. The story was just not very good nor were the characters who provided the mystery.

I agree with the others who have offered their reviews. I won't be giving up on Anne Perry, as I have read all of her books published so far. However, this is the first one where I just didn't care what happened - I could find nothing of real interest in the story, but did read to the end, just in case. I hate to say it, but I was disappointed.

I've also read every book in the Pitt (and Monk) series and have loved all of them except this one. The political stuff is boring and the beloved characters of Charlotte, Pitt himself, and Vespasia fall flat. A very disappointing book that was drudgery to read. I plowed through hoping it would get better, but it did not.

I was partway into the novel, and I couldn't bring myself to continue. I'm tired of all the political angst. Can we get back to some top-rate mysteries, please?

I agree with all the previous comments. This is substandard Anne Perry. Unconvincing, weak and, frankly, quite boring. Getting Pitt back into real detective work would be an option to revive the series. Poor Charlotte is now becoming seriously sidelined, which is a great pity since her own tribulations made the books all the more thrilling. Had this book been submitted to a publisher or an agent as an author's first, it would never have been considered for publishing.

I agree with ktkat1949's comment. Pitt's cases have been getting too political. There is no excitement to the hunt and chase. This fails as an adult book

Totally boring. I have read every single one of Anne Perry's books. I loved the Pitt series until he ended up at Special Branch and since then the books have just got worse. No more deep characterizations or complex plots or reasons. Just international intrigue and spies. This is the last one of this series I will be reading.

Weak plot that stretches credibility. Perry is sure obsessed with her characters showing all their emotions in their eyes. They could all be psychologists. Time to retire Commander Pitt.
