Young Fitz has just survived his first perilous mission as an assassin. But the cost has been high, and a brush with death has left him little more than a cripple. Battered and bitter, he has vowed to remain in the distant Mountain Kingdom, despite the fact that his oath as a King's Man requires him to return to Buckkeep. But love and events of terrible urgency soon draw him back to the court of the Six Duchies, and into the deadly intrigues of the royal family. Meanwhile, the terrible Red-Ship Raiders have renewed their vicious attacks on the coast, leaving burned-out villages and demented victims in their wake. The kingdom is also under attack from within, as plotting and treachery threaten the throne of the ailing King Shrewd. In this time of great danger, it soon becomes clear that the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz's hands - and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.

Great series and one that I was totally immersed in for weeks. As I indicated for the third book, I have read and re-read each book and this second of the series was no exception. The author makes this series real with the emotional variance of the characters and proves that adult fantasy can and should be relevant. The gut wrenching ending leaves you wanting to read the third book ASAP.

I love this book. I've read it many times. I recently moved to Vancouver and was looking forward to rereading this series, only to find VPL's only copy of Royal Assassin has been lost! It would be wonderful if it was replaced - as other commenters point out, it's best to read the Assassin trilogy all together.

Loved this series! The first book in the series is Assassin's Apprentice - probably the best book I've read this year. Royal Assassin is Vol 2, the 3rd is Assassin's Quest. They should be read together - not as stand alones.

The second in one of my favorite series of all time, this is definitely a book that you need to read with the next volume in hand- The story is excellent, but not a stand-alone book. The series should be read as a whole for best results.

A thoroughly enjoyable book - Couldn't put it down.

It's the 2nd of 3 books. The library currently doesn't have the other 2 books, but I'll be donating them so someone else can enjoy this series, too!

Young Fitz, the illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering mission, and returns to the court where he is thrown headfirst into the tumult of royal life. With the King near death, and Fitz’s only ally off on a seemingly hopeless quest, the throne itself is threatened. Meanwhile, the treacherous Red Ship Raiders have renewed their attacks on the Six Duchies, slaughtering the inhabitants of entire seaside towns. In this time of great peril, it soon becomes clear that the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz’s hands–and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.

"I have seen the end of the world, Fitz. ... Oh, not in your lifetime, nor even mine. But shall we be happy, to say that we live in the dusk rather than in the full night? Shall we rejoice that we only suffer, while your offspring will be the ones to know the torments of the damned? Shall this be why we do not act?"
