First published in 1971, "The Underground Man" is the 16th novel in the Lew Archer series. Ross Macdonald disguises family tragedy as mystery. Lew Archer is now older and no longer feisty enough to clash with local law enforcement. Also, this novel lacks the grittiness of the early Lew Archer novels. However, the plot is still well crafted with many surprising twists and turns. IMHO, I would rate "The Underground Man" at 4.0 stars.
