Our democracy today is fraught with political campaigns, lobbyists, liberal media, and Fox News commentators, all using language to influence the way we think and reason about public issues. Even so, many of us believe that propaganda and manipulation aren't problems for us--not in the way they were for the totalitarian societies of the mid-twentieth century. In How Propaganda Works, Jason Stanley demonstrates that more attention needs to be paid. He examines how propaganda operates subtly, how it undermines democracy--particularly the ideals of democratic deliberation and equality--and how it has damaged democracies of the past.

I read professor and writer Jason Stanley's more recent book, "How Fascism Works," which is more for the general reader. This is a more difficult, academic, and technical book (It was published by Princeton.) dealing with rhetoric, political philosophy, and ideology. I couldn't always follow it, despite my useless minor in philosophy, but it was thought provoking and intelligent, rarities in this day and age. For more on rhetoric, pick up "Words Like Loaded Pistols."

This is an excellent, albeit somewhat dry [really has to be given the subject matter] read.
It is very important for the American reader to keep in mind several items: (1) President Obama signed legislation making it legal for the government to propagandize the citizenry, formerly illegal; (2) the federal courts decided during the Bush administration that it is legel for Fox News [and any other news company/stations] to fictionalize the news and fire any reporter or on-air person who refuses to lie when ordered; and, (3) whether it is Fox News [Rupert Murdoch] or PBS or NPR [primarily financed by the Koch brothers through the WGBH Educational Foundation], it is ALL propaganda.
