After his identity and credentials are established, the Chief of Police lets Tibbs go and attempts to enlist his help in solving the case. Just saw this movie on KQED last Sat. nite. Still one of the best civil rights movies around...Great performance by all, Steiger got Academy award, mainly because he did not get it in previous year for his really tortured role in The Pawnbroker... see that movie also for another great performance.

Wow this was really a great movie with wonderful acting. I checked it out and it sat here for several days and I was contemplating taking it back without watching. Finally did and what a great surprise. I saw it when it came out and liked it then but I could not remember much about it.

You need to spend a piece of your limited time left alive watching this instead of playing video games or getting drunk.

The movie is listed above as "Groundbreaking Classic Black Films" and I would add that it is also one of the finest films ever produced in the United States. All the cast shines, but especially Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. They play off of one another the entire movie. Warren Oats as a deputy sheriff really pulls the entire cast together. He is so humorous that it lightens the mood of the movie. There are few movies with a script and cast that could stand up to "In The Heat of the Night".

"In The Heat of the Night" you have two great performances. Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. These two performances will go down in film history because they show racial bigotry for what it is. Sidney Poitier was perfect as the African American Detective. In the South, this was a new thing at the time. "In the Heat of the Night" makes my Top 20 films of All Time!

This film is definitely dated, watching it now. Rod Steiger gave a great performance, but I have to say I find Sidney Portier's acting a bit too self-conscious. Still, a good watch overall.

Gillespie: I didn't know you'd slap any white man! Least of all Endicott!

Tibbs: All right. Give me another day. Two days. I'm close. I can pull that fat cat down. I can bring him right off this hill!

Gillespie: Oh, boy. Man, you're just like the rest of us.
