Now, with no direction, a year out of high school, and obsessed with making umbrellas that look like her own dreams (but mostly just mourning her aunt), she is easily swept away by Kiran Thrasha glamorous, capricious acquaintance who shows up and asks Jane to accompany her to a gala at her family's island mansion called Tu Reviens. Jane remembers her aunt telling her: "If anyone ever invites to you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you'll go." With nothing but a trunkful of umbrella parts to her name, Jane ventures out to the Thrash estate. Then her story takes a turn, or rather, five turns. What Jane doesn't know is that Tu Reviens will offer her choices that can ultimately determine the course of her untethered life. But at Tu Reviens, every choice comes with a reward, or a price.
Jane has lived an ordinary life, raised by her aunt Magnoliaan adjunct professor and deep sea photographer. Jane counted on Magnolia to make the world feel expansive and to turn life into an adventure. But Aunt Magnolia was lost a few months ago in Antarctica on one of her expeditions.

For YA and new adult readers who want something different or have "read it all," Cashore's newest delivers a challenging storytelling framework with an ending that pays off for the work. Consider Blake Crouch's Dark Matter as a read alike for older teens.

I found this book unusual and enchanting. Though it is perhaps too strange to appeal to everyone, I do recommend it for the more adventurous reader who enjoys genre-bending novels.

I made it to page 115 before giving up ... the story was so convoluted, and filled with so many 'mysterious' characters on 'mysterious' missions, I could not bring myself to care even a little bit about what was so special and wondrous about the house they've all congregated in. Skip it.

I couldn't get into this book; between the main character being an umbrella artist, and all the rich people having non conversations, I had to tap out. Why does no one have direct conversations with the other characters? What is magic about this mansion? Why keep reading? Why indeed.....

Honestly, I am a huge fan of Kristen Cashore's Graceling series. I've read and re-read all three books and absolutely loved them, because she has a gift for creating a great storyline and having the skill required to execute it. So when I saw this book on a library shelf, I eagerly grabbed it and headed home as soon as possible to start it. However, the beginning, no matter how well written, was quite boring. As much as the idea of five alternate realities appeal to me, I didn't get past the first fifty pages before tossing the book aside. Sorry, but this book just didn't capture my attention.

This was an interesting book. However, from the synopsis and the way the story starts it is impossible to anticipate where this book will go. It becomes a tale on how a seemingly minor choice can have drastically different outcomes. As the novel explored each choice available to Jane in an innocuous conversation with her friend the scenarios just became increasingly stranger. At first, the story seems to be a simple realistic fictional mystery. Then it warps into some odd science fiction options that fit outlandishly within the framework of the original story. As a result, I had a hard time getting through this book - not only was it slightly repetitive, but it just started to get weird. The last two choices were especially strange and just left me shaking my head in the turn they'd taken with the story. Not quite what I would have expected from Cashore after the wonderfulness of the Graceling realm series.
