Based on the true-life story of Michael Glatze, a gay activist who becomes an anti-gay Christian pastor. Michael is a high profile gay youth activist who created a national controversy when he claimed to no longer be gay and became a straight Christian pastor. The film follows Michael from his life in San Francisco with his boyfriend Bennett--where he pursues political activism, a journalist career at XY Magazine, social awareness, and sexual exploration--to his days of personal self-discovery. After a traumatic scare, Michael is plagued by doubt and paranoia, and begins a religious reawakening. Michael renounces his gay lifestyle, rejects his friends, and endeavors to find his "true self." He explores Buddhism and Mormonism, yet ultimately lands at a Christian Bible school in rural Wyoming where he meets his girlfriend Rebekah, and becomes the pastor of his own church.

While I don't share the Michael Glatze character's theological viewpoint, which, it seems to me, rejects God's liberatory love and Christ's example and sacrifice, this is nevertheless an interesting film. One of the interesting (and telling?) things is that how Glatze first came to identify as gay is not really dealt with in the film.

Also interesting is the scene where the Glatze character is expelled from a Buddhist retreat for having expressed his beliefs. Yes, liberals can be very intolerant and hypocritical though, of course, they have no monopoly on these characteristics.

The Glatze character at one point speaks of how "the gay identity has been packaged". He's right and Joseph Massad's 2007 take (*Desiring Arabs*) on the "Gay International" is one good starting point on this subject. However, it may be fairly argued that all collective identities are to some extent constructed/packaged and that does not invalidate them or make them sinful.

James Franco gives a solid performance.

Although I did not agree with the main character's opinion I fully supported the writer's Concept that.being able to have and to express an opinion is acceptable. Of course there are extremes like the man that was teaching that the holocost did not happen there remains avenues to address such What I am agreeing is that popular opipinion is not reason enough to reject all other opinions.
