Having just seen this, I feel somewhat unsettled. Emily Dickinson has been highly praised by experts in poetry; her voice lingers. There is this similarity to Van Gogh: the work was nearly ignored in their lifetimes. Her situation in life might be described as a hothouse flower; she was protected, possibly indulged. At the same time she took to heart the notion of honoring her mother and father. Perhaps the path she chose led to madness, or madness to the path she chose. How can anyone know if she really knew herself or simply preferred not to. Could be seen as a sleeping beauty who never awoke. That might be why critics favor this 91% and the public only 49. For me, this did not provide the release of tears; and early scenes that attempted humor, or at least wit, seemed somewhat forced. Still, it fills a cinematic void, answering the question, 'Who was this Emily Dickinson, anyway?'

The morning after I've reflected on the title, 'A Quiet Passion'. The word covers Jesus' crucifixion; with this in mind a certain scene will make more sense. In the Mary/Martha way of things, the Martha here more truly embodies a quiet passion. I'm bumping this one star, 4 1/2.
