Sketch your Art Out
A Skill and Style Activity GuideBook - 2017
There is nothing more exciting than peering into the sketchbook of an artist. Getting to see the build, the bones, the body of work behind some of your favorite finished works is like seeing how a magician composes their tricks: the mirrors behind the magic. Among all the skills of an artist, whether a painter, designer, or illustrator, nothing is more essential than the passion to sketch. Knowing how to translate your experiences to the page allows for spontaneous creations that build and build into worlds of creativity. Art books tend to exist on a spectrum between "picture books" and formulaic "how to draw" books. These types of books usually contain step-by-step tutorials or full diagnostics of art theory. Learning to draw, paint, and sketch is a fluid and dynamic process that pulls from both spectrums. If you were to look at any artist's sketchbook, you would find a mix of technical explorations, loose gesture drawings, and note taking. In this book, we want to allow the viewers to become participants and take part in the creative process. Through a highly developed style, we will use the format of a sketchbook to teach basic principles through exciting demonstrations and practices, along with hands-on drawing activities and broken down illustrations. Each page will be fully submerged in the style of Katy Lipscomb's sketchbook with her partner Tyler to help break down the 'fear' element. It will contain all the excitement of viewing a master's work while simultaneously encouraging the viewer to participate. Simple elements through this sketchbook theming will create a continuity of style and subject matter while we explore together the basic mediums of graphite, pen, and colored pencil. Each medium will be described in a way that is accessible, yet descriptive and will feature moments for activities, spontaneity, collaboration, and experimental techniques. This book is meant to be dog-eared, drawn in, filled in, and- above all-treasured while the viewer gains the skills and inspiration to draw anything they wish, anywhere they please.
