I ask myself why I rated this three stars. Critics fell all over themselves, 97 percent on RT. Audience rating a respectable 79 percent. There is perhaps a clue in the ironic mock sales pitch, 'we use all the cheapest ingredients and pass the savings on to you'. This fits also with my experience of purchasing what I thought was a can opener at the 99 cent store to find I had really come home with a can opener representation. Sean is making his own kind of pies and they are as interesting as they are because he has mastered the art getting it done on the cheap and independently. He claims to know himself well enough that he is where he wants to be. Working with marginal subjects fits in with his idea of presenting something new and fresh; only one critic faults him for his superficiality. The final scene here is the money shot that might have been persuasive for many. One reviewer was all for it, but allowed that probably no one would want to see it twice. Its discomforting, and sad. Not to say that there aren't any cases that match it to a tee. Jerry Springer fans might not have the patience for this, but is it just as exploitative? I say maybe yes.
