People say that a lot of liberties were taken with this movie. But I think that if even half of this story is true - wow, what a life! It's amazing that she made it as far as she did. I enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anyone looking to watch something shocking, jaw droppping, funny at times and a different take on what was portrayed in the media.

Really don't know why the big deal is about. Don't forget this is a movie and creative liberties are taken. Tonya my have ice talent, but she is not the complete package as other skaters are. We did not care for this cheesy movie.

One of those movies you are happy to have seen, but probably won't watch again. Gets right into life in the invisible lower-working class, which will likely make you squeamish. Tonya is sympathetically portrayed, though, and I did end up pulling for her by the end--relieved that she is now married and a "good mother" to her kids.

Very well-made and entertaining movie. Allison Janney, your Oscar is well-deserved for your uncompromising performance as the nightmare, Tonya's mother. When this movie first came out, I thought to myself - I remember when the 'Tonya Harding Incident' was all over the news; I don't need to revisit it. But, in truth, I learned a lot from this movie. It seems Tonya is a survivor of abuse both from her mother and her boyfriend (and later husband). Skating was her outlet - her place to shine when those around her were treating her badly. This foul-mouthed, uncouth woman with her bad make-up, hair, and costumes is our heroine. Forced to skate at age three by her pushy mother, she ends up thriving in the sport. She is not the abusive one. It seems unlikely that she knew anything about the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. Yet, she was forced to pay the price because of the misguided buffoons around her. She never had her Olympic golden moment, but then maybe she has won in the end with this movie.

This movie is not for those who are turned off by a tornado of profanity. If you can get past this then "I, Tonya" is a great film with a bevy of well -portrayed "screwed up" characters led by a deluded "body guard" as well as a foul mouthed and disgusting matriarch. Biggest laugh for me was how one of the below-mentioned "boobs" breaks through a locked thick-glassed door!! For some reason this movie invoked of few memories of the long-ago "To Die For" starring a deluded wannabe in Nicole Kidman. Perhaps a stretch I'm not sure.

tough movie! the inability for Tonya to escape the violence that seems to be the first response from her mother and her husband, the delusional security-obsessed 'body guard', the total focus on skating to the exclusion of developing life skills and the ability to communicate with those in authority in the skating world. she was very talented but hung out to dry by the 'system' and her own lack of ability to accept personal responsibility.

it made me think of The Fighter.

What a quirky bunch of characters in pursuing their unique dreams, only in America! Felt guilty laughing at their outrageous behaviors while appalled at the verbal and physical domestic violence, especially the “incident” which was unbelievable yet true. The extended scenes introduced the real characters who provided their own set of truths and blames that the writer weaved into the film.

Superbly well-crafted docu-dramedy of the infamous ice skater Tonya Harding, and "The Incident" with Nancy Kerrigan that sent shockwaves across the Olympic skating world. The movie attempts to give us some background into Tonya's side of the story, where we catch a glimpse of her rugged, troubled childhood living in poverty in the woods of Oregon, where skating was the only thing that really mattered to her. Allison Janney totally steals the show as Tonya's jaded, unapologetic mother, who insults and smacks her daughter with an easy nonchalance while taking her from skating rink to skating rink, dropping F-bombs with a cigarette constantly dangling at the side of her mouth, and considering the regular humiliation of Tonya as simply a way to build her into a champion. Soon Jeff Gillooly enters the picture; and all too soon Tonya has married "the first guy that ever called her pretty," with disastrous, abusive results. The entire cast is drop-dead perfect in their roles, with the story told in such a way as to reveal the constant undercurrent of absurd hilarity in what is described by an observer as an "operation... done by two of the biggest boobs in a story populated solely by boobs!" Richly entertaining, and will be especially appreciated by those of us who remember the unbelievably absurd events as they actually happened.

I,Tonya is a bio-documentary film about the life of ex Olympic skater Tonya Harding played by Margot Robbie. I must say this is one of the most amazing documentaries to date with an artistic flow and good pacing this film often switch from black comedy to relatable problems and shows the life on Tonya Harding from her hard life living with an aggressive mother to her downfall and having to juggle careers. Though many would think by the description this film wouldn't be close to anything entertaining but it really is a trip. Margot Robbie was an excellent role, this movie showed her true talent compared to the infamous movie "Suicide squad". I would recommend this movie to everyone even if you don't believe it is necessarily your cup of tea, give it a try you might like it even if it can be a little over the top. Everyone remembers the Tonya incident – especially those of us in the NW. I didn’t really want to hear the story again, nor do I love ice skating, but this film does a great job of portraying life in the late 1980s/early 1990s. News was becoming a 24 hour event, internet just beginning and people wanted constant information. You have to appreciate Tonya somewhat after watching this film – she was a redneck raised girl with a terrible mother and a missing father. Her only hope in life was based on her athletic ability. She marries young; her marriage is very troubled and violent. The skating world wants an American princess on the ice, which Tonya is not with her home made outfits and low-class background. She eventually succeeds in her skating, and then receives alleged death threats and her team of people formulate their own retributive plan—injure American competitor Nancy Kerrigan. As one pulp rag writer says, they hired the two biggest boobs in a network of boobs to handle the job and over of course it becomes an international sensation. The movie tells the story from every individual character’s point of view—Tonya’s interpretation, her husband’s viewpoint, her mother’s perspective (the actress portraying her won an Academy Award) and it all comes across like as a gigantic network of messed up boobs! Not an uplifting story and if you do wrong you are more than likely to get caught in this day and age of 24 hour media, but worth watching if you have time or any interest in the subject matter.

Quotes from mom:
Tonya's my 5th child from husband number 4. She was always a handful. And I guess we spoiled her. Which is a goddamned hat trick when you haven't got shit your entire life. Still, I drove her to competitions, practices. I sewed her all her costumes. But to her, her mother's a monster. Generally people either love Tonya or are... not big fans.
Just like people either love America or are not big fans. Tonya was totally American.
They want a wholesome American family? ... Well. It's not gonna be easy.. But I could pull that outta my ass.
I like your hair pulled back like that. You look young.
-I'm 23, mom.
I'm not here to tell you I told you so. I'm not..
-Why are you here? What do you want?
I want you to know... I don't know. That I am on your side.

I'm trying to skate and I keep... falling in front of everyone. While... Nancy gets her own private rink where someone catches her before she falls.
You're a taker. Every cent I made went to your skating and you took it. What do you want?
Well this was a stupid fxcking idea..
-Was anything I ever did good enough for you?
You were soft.
- At three?
I made you a fighter. You never had a chance...
-You fxcked with my head. You made me think I could skate best when my life was shxt. And now my life is shzt. You made that fzcking real for me. I don't want that!
You would've picked it in a heartbeat! You should be thanking me. Not blaming me.
-Did you...? I mean when I was a kid, did you ever love me? Or anything?
You think Sonia Henie's mother loved her? Poor fzckin' you. I didn't stay home making apple brown Bettys. No, I made you a champion! Knowing you'd hate me for it. That's the sacrifice a mother makes. I wish I had a mother like me. Instead of nice. Nice gets you shzt.

Look, Nancy gets hit one time and the whole world shits... For me it was an all-the-time occurrence.
But there's no smoking on the ice.
-Oh well, I'll smoke it quietly then.
I hit her one time, with a hairbrush.
She stands out because she looks like she chops wood every morning.
Yeah, and I waitress full time to pay for your coaching.
- Yes, but she's not my child.
I don't know, Tonnie. I would never be with someone who fzckin' hit me.
- You hit dad.
That's different.
You skated like a graceless bull dyke! I was embarrassed for you.
-I'm sorry.
Your father's not paying alimony ya know? Every penny I make, every penny goes to your skating. And you weren't even fzcking trying.
-I said I was sorry.
Don't talk back to me.
I don't know what to tell you. Marrying the first idiot who says you're pretty. You fzck dumb. You don't marry dumb.

I was loved for a minute, then I was hated. Then I was just a punch line.
But do you think that CBS who was showin' the games was gonna let this ginormous
ratings fxcker not happen?
Your Honor. I don't have an education. All I know is skating. That's all I know. And I.. I'm no one... If I can't skate... I'm not... I mean, I'm not some monster. I just... I'm trying to do the best in what I know how to. ... please. Please! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate...!
The people still wanted to see me. So I became a lady boxer. I mean, why not? Violence was always what I knew anyway. America, you know... They want someone to love... but they want someone to hate. And they want it easy. But what's easy? And the haters always say, Tonya Tell the truth. But there's no such thing as truth. I mean it's bullshxt. Everyone has their own truth.
