Directed by Guillermo del Toro in 2017, this American weirdly romantic fantasy depicts the romance between a mute female janitor and a captured humanoid amphibian creature.
With a willing suspension of disbelief, you should be able to enjoy this unbelievable yet heartwarming fairy tale.

Finally saw it. I was putting it off because I was sure I wouldn't like it. I LOVED IT! A wonderful fantasy romance movie. Well done. Suspense, violence, romance and mystery...a little bit of everything set in the early 60ies. Michael Shannon plays such a good, bad guy. If you are expecting a Sci-fi movie you will be disappointed.

Thoroughly enjoyed this film twice now. I'll watch it again in the future.

A delightful story about a lonely mute woman who is tired of "loving" herself in the tub each morning and is looking for the love of a good man but there just don't seem to be any available. All of the men are white, sexist, racist, oppressive, abusive, selfish, fearful, intolerant and just not quite what she's looking for. Fortunately for her her bath time fun time fantasies take an exciting turn in her favour when she meets a fish man who is held under the boots of those very same white men I was mentioning earlier. No more lonely mornings in the tub now that her watery dreams have manifested themselves into the perfect man who is so perfect he's not even human.

I don't want to spoil the story for anyone so I won't go any further, but rest assured that this is not simply just another story about how liberals are awesome and conservatives suck. Because that's just not what this movie is.

"The Shape of Water" is a weird, beautiful fantasy. The story is straightforward, as Mr. Spoiler Alert explained to everyone earlier. The magic comes from the relationships, the beauty of the creature, and the cinematography. Del Toro is brilliant. SERIOUS violence (torture/shootings), nudity (Sally Hawkins has a great bod and she's naked a lot), and sexual acts mean this is NOT FOR KIDS.

Best picture, really? Nice fantasy story but come on. You can expect a Broadway musical in a couple of years. Why not. Different version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. In that old school horror movie the Creature doesn't get the girl. In this updated version the nicer Creature does.

Magical, light hearted (Reminded me of La La Land), told in classical prose, details in the story make the ending special. (the cat episode not as gruesome as, say Steven Kings Skin Walker).

It is a fantasy. If you begin with that understanding, this film easily ranks as one of the finest ever wrought. Every aspect - production quality and design, definition of characters even to the smaller parts, timing of scenes, editing, sensitivity of the score, and especially dialogue - works together to deliver the message with powerful delicacy. Guillermo is clearly a master of the art of film! I love this story; it is very special. It moved me, so much that I still can't find the right words. The best picture and director win works toward restoring my faith in the Academy.

Creature from the Black Lagoon anyone? Played out like a comic book; mindlesss fun but tried to be too artsy.

How this movie was voted Best Picture of the Year is beyond my comprehension. It was not even a decent picture. Here's how it goes....homely mute woman who likes to take her clothes off meets amphibian being held in a government facility, feels sorry for it, feeds it boiled eggs, falls in love with it, rescues it from brutal government dude in charge of the facility, keeps it in her bathtub, gets amorous with the creature, creature has healing powers, kills government dude on the docks, makes woman into an amphibian, and the live happily ever after under the water. Silly beyond belief.

54 quotes in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors.) However, some of the best quotes are silent signs. You just have to watch them, like this one:

Zelda: [Elisa looks noticeably happier] Why you smilin', hon? Well stop lookin' like that. What happened?

[Elisa shakes her head to say "nothing"]

Zelda: Why? How? How? Does he - have a...?

[Elisa nods and uses her hands to describe what the Amphibian Man's penis looks like]

Zelda: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Zelda: Lor'...! Never trust a man. Even when he looks flat down there.

"A man has the decency not to fuck up. Now that's one thing, that's real decent of him.

"But the other kind of decency, it doesn't really matter. We sell it, but it's an export. We sell it because we don't use it."

-Character of General Hoyt
