A peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns, the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. The tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town's dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices.

This is a fun, dark ride. It has the Coen Brothers written all over it. Matt Damon really carries the film with his deadpan delivery of a man looking composed, but crumbling under the weight of a catastrophe of his own making. The violence is over the top, but, I think, George Clooney didn't take it as far into the darkness as the Coens themselves would have. The bucolic 1950s are beautifully embodied in Julianne Moore just like they were in 'Far from Heaven' (2002) - Todd Haynes' homage to Douglas Sirk. The 10-year age gap between Julianne and Matt is somewhat of a distraction. I love her, but a woman in her late 50s is unlikely to be the mother of a young boy. Oscar Isaac is great, as always. The only trouble - he did not have enough screen time. There is a side story of racial prejudice that didn't quite make it to fruition for me.

WHAT A DISASTER!! The Coen Brothers developed a script - in certain scenes you can detect their bizarre genius, but this film never captures the brilliance of "Fargo". Then George Clooney took over ( a huge waste of talent here ) and the resultant script and direction are a bloody mess - literally and figuratively. The film telegraphs the wife's demise and the reasons why. Matt Damon and Julianne Moore ( did I mention this film is a waste of great talent???? ) run the gamut of emotions from A to B ( Dorothy Parker ). Could their performances possibly have been more deadpan? The only white characters with any personality at all are uncle Mitch and the Lodge's son Nicky. The little boy's terror as he works out the plot of his father and aunt is devastating. NO HUMOR HERE FOLKS. When a father asks his son whether he should call the police or kill the boy, nothing about this is redeeming. Then into the mix arrives a family of color in idyllic Suburbicon. There is a message here, but it is delivered with such a heavy hand that it becomes a parody of racism not a parable. This film could not decide what story it wanted to tell and handicapped most of its actors with so little emotion that you could have been watching a film on bread baking. This film would not be so horrible if lesser minds had been at work. Avoid this film completely. Kristi & Abby Tabby

The trailer made it seem like a dark comedy, but it's not funny and it's just bland. I do think it spends all of its time on style and none on substance. It might be one of the worst scripts in recent memory. It has a lot of talent around the project, but it is just a complete trainwreck of a movie.

Yet another awful movie from the terrible and completely over-rated Coen brothers.
Usually the terrible and completely over-rated Coen brothers' movies start out with a glimmer of hope that the terrible and completely over-rated Coen brothers' movie you are currently watching won't be so terrible and completely over-rated but I hated this one from opening shot to credits.

A dark social crime comedy when the citizens of a suburb were up in arms when a young African American family moved in while right under their noses, living among them, was an acceptable “good” white family that was embroiled in monstrous sins behind closed door. While it was admirable that Clooney included the racial backdrop, believe it would be a much better film only on the merit of the unexpected chain of bloody events.

From wiki:
It is loosely based on a 1957 incident in Levittown, Pennsylvania, in which a black family moved into the previously all-white neighborhood, leading to racial-charged harassment and violence against the family.

What a very confusing movie. I am not sure how this is listed as comedy.. it also touches on racism. I watched until the end, but I would not recommend.

The people of Suburbicon hail from all corners of this great nation. A melting pot of diversity from cities as far away as... New York!
We defy the supporters of Mr. Mayers to say our fears are groundless. We favor racial integration, but only at such time the negro shows he's ready for it. They don't seek to better themselves. This community has come too far to move backwards. We demand our civil rights to live where we want and with whom we want, and, with god's help, we will overcome!
Go back to where you came from!
Get the hell out of here!
Go back to where you came from!
Get the hell out of here!
Go back to where you came from!
Get the hell out of here! ...

You have to make decisions. Decisions like what's best for the family. Who's being helpful. Who's a liability.
Yes, it all boils down to one word, coincidence. That happens in the opera a lot.
The whole trouble with this integration business is that, in the end, it probably will end up with mixing socially. And you will have... Well, I think their aim is mixed marriages and becoming equal with the whites. But the only way they're gonna do that is by education and by bettering themselves, not by pushing in the way they have here.
Thank god it wasn't the Schvartzes that just moved in.
-Excuse me?
Isn't that what you Jews call 'em? Schvartzes?
-I'm an Episcopalian.
Really? I thought you were Jewish.
Because of your last name.
Sounded Jewish.
-I'm an Episcopalian.
