Terrible movie, a waste of time and it was really hard to follow.

Homosexuality, violence (anal rape scene was very long), physical+ verbal violence, full-on nudity of males, and females.
Shoddy / shaky / haphazard / hand-held camera for most of this "movie".
Many 5 minute wasted scenes of Blair Witch/drug/drunk-type camerwork that never focuses on anything? really ?
Craptacular flick, even when watched at double speed.
Can't recall where I read this garbage was recommended.

Story is reversed, so it is probably difficult to catch up. However, it is good if we reverse contexts from end to start.

I think several commentators here didn't rate this film because the rape scene at its center is so brutal and horrible and lurid it is boundary crossing. My girlfriend at the time demanded that we shut it off. It is not that IRREVERSIBLE is awful or poor, though one can easily argue that it is, it is that for most it is unwatchable. I was going to suggest for an extraordinary brutal rape movie double feature, one could also check out Bruno Dumont's TWENTYNINE PALMS, which was made around the same time as IRREVERSIBLE, but I notice that SPL no longer has it in its collection.

.....the film takes much risk, but the extras include significant special effects insight--a fight scene involves the crushing of a man's skull with a fire extinguisher; they made a "rubber cast" of the actor's head but it did not react/film properly so they went to great lengths to explain how it was digitally massaged for realism; however, in the true work of film, they should have just re-created a more appropriate/responsive rubber cast ?

Take a pass on this film. French film is often excellent, but this one is grotesque and nearly unwatchable.

Viewers should exercise extreme caution when approaching this film. It is not for the faint of heart. Or even the stout of heart. In fact, it's not really for anybody. French director Gaspar Noe doesn't seem to make films for any audience, although I guess he's courting those into the avant-garde and transgressive. The centerpiece of this film is a brutal and really unwatchable rape and assault scene. It makes you wonder if something like this should ever be depicted in a film because it's so disturbing and unsettling. And, frankly, a little exploitative and deliberately assaultive. And it's disturbing without any meaning; it's nihilistic, wallowing in its own bad boy behavior. Lars Von Trier treats his audience this way too, but has a little more talent. Take away the rape and a repellant scene in a gay club and you have nothing left. The only thing that salvages it are the performances of real life couple Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel. Oh, the film is run backwards, "Memento" style. Again, it's a gimmick with zero substance. Repulsive.

In my opinion this is Gaspar Noe's best film. The shot is moving constantly in the beginning, but settles down a bit as the movie progresses. The movie is very unique and follows characters in reverse order over a night in Paris. There is tons of nudity and a very brutal rape scene. His other movie "Enter the Void" uses the same camera movement, but I feel could have used some editing as it seemed to go on and on for too long.

This is a difficult film to watch. Artistically it is quite good. Nonetheless, there were two particular scenes that were disturbingly harsh, one where I almost burst into tears. Now I'm so afraid of the realism of it. Can't wander through a red Paris underpass alone at night. *shivers*

Definitely not for the faint of heart. A very disturbing film, with brutal and graphic sex, violence, and sexual violence.
The cinematography, soundtrack, and reverse storytelling all combine to make it very disorienting and stress-inducing.
Much of the dialogue (French) is hard to decipher over the background audio, and the subtitles don't seem to match it that well.
I fast-forwarded through most of the film, stopping mainly at the beginning of scene changes to try to figure out what was going on.
Anyone planning to watch this might want to check out Wikipedia or IMBD to get some perspective before pressing <Play>.

(3) Alex: I've been reading the most amazing book.
Marcus: So what is it?
Alex: It says that the future is already written. It's all there. And the proof lies in premonitory dreams.
Pierre: Wow! It's putting us to sleep already!
Marcus: Even dreams are bad news.
Pierre: I often dream I'm sleeping. It's my only dream.
Alex: Well, at least you relax!
