The Secrets Between Us
A Novel
Large Print - 2018
After being fired from her job as a servant, Bhima forms a partnership with Parvati to sell produce at the local market and makes her first true friend.
Poor and illiterate, Bhima had faithfully worked for the Dubash family, an upper-middle-class Parsi household, for more than twenty years. After speaking the truth about a heinous crime perpetrated against her own family, she was cruelly fired. Searching for some other way to support herself and her granddaughter, Maya, Bhimi's path intersects with Parvati, a bitter, taciturn older woman. The two form a partnership selling fruits and vegetables at the local market. As they work together, each confesses the truth about their lives and the wounds that haunt them.

Great writer! Caught my attention in the first sentence
This is a beautiful and well crafted story. The emotional evocative tale of relationships and people. I loved every minute of it!! Spellbinding!
I couldn't put down the Space Between Us so I was thrilled when I heard there was a follow up! Both books are beautifully written. The author is so descriptive so it is easy to place yourself in the story. Wonderful characters and dialogue. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
I was profoundly touched by the author's novel, The Space Between Us, so I checked out this sequel, The Secrets Between Us, when I found out that it was released. In many ways, this book was more powerful to me. The main character is Bhima, the servant who had worked on one household for dozens of years and was fired. (I'll try not to give spoilers.) Her granddaughter Maya also plays a significant role. But the other pivotal character is Parvati, a very old woman who sits scowling on a street corner selling 6 withered cauliflower daily. The interactions between all three, as well as Bhima finding a way to move forward financially and personally are riveting.
I'm grateful that our library has copies of both of these books and I highly recommend them.
An excellent continuation of "The Space Between Us".
Two elderly women in Mumbai form an unlikely friendship.
Yes, this book was as good as the first. I recommend reading the first book, The Space Between Us before reading The Secrets Between Us. As a reader you will feel more satisfied after the 2nd book if you also read the first. The author is a great writer and it is always nice to be transported to another country, and this author does it beautifully. Enjoy!
NY recommendation Jun 2018
Somewhat predictable accounting of two East Indian women (Mombai)--one a former prostitute given away at age 5, the other a woman who can't forgive herself for "making" her husband leave her with their son. A grand-daughter, a gay couple, personality extremes and conflicts--well-written, a good summer book.
Two women living in the slums of Mumbai form a tentative business partnership and friendship. Recommended for book clubs.
