THE INNOCENTS is a French-Polish film set in a Polish convent just after World War II. A Red Cross physician comes to aid the people in the small village. During that time a nun finds the physician, and asks for her help in delivering the babies of several nuns who are cloistered in the convent. Very emotional film as the nuns are going through their own crises of faith, as one can imagine.

Directed by Anne Fontaine in 2016 based on the real events, this French drama delves into the aftermath of mass rapes by Soviet soldiers at the convent in Poland.
The pregnant nuns go through an unprecedented crisis of faith.
Although it doesn't seem easy to watch, its nuanced exploration of the minds of the strict Mother Superior as well as the victimized nuns appears well worth watching.

Supposedly based on an actual incident, Anne Fontaine’s searing drama pits belief in Divine Goodness against a world wracked with ugliness and she does so without the hollow sermons so common in today’s “faith-based” melodramas. Filmed against a wintry backdrop of bitter snowfields and leaden skies—pierced now and again by glowing candles or a sober Latin chant—Fontaine doesn’t insult her audience with heavenly metaphors, what shafts of sunlight course through the convent walls are wholly earthbound while the young doctor herself remains a steadfast atheist (her lover a fellow doctor and disillusioned Jew who’s still mourning the relatives he lost to the Nazis and their Polish collaborators). Between the polar extremes of Abbess and Physician however lie the nuns themselves and it is their reaction to the horrors they underwent which gives the film its bite. As some cling tenaciously to whatever comfort their faith has left to offer, others begin to question their calling, and a few begin to question God himself…and all the while the babies keep being born. As Mathilde, Lou de Laâge embodies secular pragmatism with just a touch of that naïveté which comes with youth while Agata Kulesza, in the role of Mother Superior, plays a conflicted soul so bound by the demands of her office that she’s lost touch with why she took her vows in the first place. And bridging the two is Agata Buzek as Sister Maria, a woman who turned her back on the earthly temptations she once knew only to have them come back to haunt her in her most vulnerable moments. A brilliant ensemble piece sure to impress believers and non-believers alike.

While difficult to watch, it concentrated on the story of the nuns and their story, not the abuse that led to their predicament. I highly recommend this movie, to acknowledge these brave women and those who helped them, and for the enjoyment of a film well made.

It was slightly uncomfortable to watch, only because it was the truth and so wrong. I'm glad I watched it, we should never deny history.

Like so many foreign films it makes Hollywood seem so juvenile. Watch it! And don't judge.

This is a difficult film to watch.
There's the conflict of religion, the aftermath of war, and the internalized shame the sisters contain in order to fulfill their duties. There are scenes and dialog shared that is uncomfortable, so do proceed with caution. But the solidarity of these women as their situation permits is something to witness.

Totally not surprised this is based on true events. What a disturbing & tragic story.

A film much much more than what is in the description herein. You can watch the hour long extras or read the booklet that accompanies the DVD. I did both just to make sure I got them all. Amazing true human and God story among the ruins of man made wars. Best quote: Faith is twenty-four hours of doubt and one minute of hope.

Recommend this movie; it is very touching. Although one has to read all the dialogue it is well worth the time to watch.

On faith:
I can no longer reconcile my faith with these terrible events. God, of whom I still consider myself to be the divine bride, nonetheless wanted this.
-Wanted it?
If it happened, that means He wanted it.
-We cannot know what God wants. The only truth is His love.
But none have lost their faith?
-You know, faith... At first, you're like a child holding your father's hand, feeling safe.
Then a time comes — and I think it always comes — when your father lets go. You're lost, alone in the dark. You cry out, but no one answers. Even if you prepare for it, you're caught unawares. It hits you right in the heart. That's the cross we bear.
I have many flaws. I deserve the harshest penance. I've never had much faith. And since this happened, I've lost the little I had.
I was stylish then. I liked men and men liked me.
-Don't you ever regret it?
Faith is twenty-four hours of doubt and one minute of hope.

A letter from a true friend:
Dear Mathilde,
The dark clouds have moved on. The sun shines brightly in our sky. And you are in our hearts. Perhaps other wars will come. Other dangers threaten us. It will soon be harder to write to each other. But whatever fate awaits us, I feel ready to face it. I know, even if it makes you laugh, that God sent you. May He accompany you in your trials and may you always be joyful.
When I joined the Red Cross team, I was still a student. I ended up carrying stretchers under fire when Paris was liberated. Sorry, but I pissed myself more than once. But I've never regretted it. And I imagined I would save lives.
