The eighth set in the Masterplots II series, which complements the original 12-volume Masterplots , revised edition (1976), the scope of Masterplots II, poetry is refreshingly broad, both historically and internationally. Its six volumes examine 760 individual works of poetry ranging from seventh-century Chinese verse to 20th-century poetry from around the world that have not previously appeared in the Masterplots series. The majority are English-language poems, but a significant representation of poems in translation is also included, with many of them being works by winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature. In all, works by 275 poets, writing in more than ten languages, are featured. The arrangement is alphabetical by title. For each essay, ready-reference top matter is followed by a three-section text: "The Poem", presenting an overview of the work; "Forms and Devices," looking closely at the poetic devices the poet uses; and "Themes and Meanings," examining the underlying concerns expressed in the work. The bibliography is divided into two sections: the first covers general and theoretical studies; the second, arranged by poet, lists secondary sources about the major poets covered. Indexed by title, author, and type (i.e. subgenre) of poem. A bravura production from Magill and Salem Press, which would benefit only from an integral or companion anthology of the poems examined. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
