Maybe it deserves 5 stars. Hoffman is sympathetic, and even deeply serious, but I think he still has a somewhat condescending attitude toward Poe, perhaps the last gasp of New Criticism re Poe. Still it is full of insight and interesting ideas and about as good as any volume length work on Poe's writings. Well worth reading if you are interested in Poe.
