A VERY classic from Eric Carle, creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

When a very lonely firefly goes out into the night searching for other fireflies, it sees a lantern, a candle, and the eyes of a dog, cat, and owl all glowing in the darkness. It even sees a surprise celebration of light. But it is not until it discovers other fireflies that it finds exactly what it's looking for--a surprise sure to bring smiles to anyone who turn the final page!

Lushly illustrated with Eric Carle's trademark vibrant collage art, soothingly told with a gentle read-aloud rhythm, and complete with a surprise sure to "light up" children's faces, The Very Lonely Firefly will fast become a storytime favorite. Read it with a flashlight in the dark or under the table--and watch those fireflies glow!

Praise for The Very Lonely Firefly:

"Carle's richly hued, collage-like art and gentle text will be comfortingly familiar to his numerous young devotees."--Publishers Weekly

"This is a compelling accomplishment [and a] guaranteed winner as a read-aloud or read-alone."--School Library Journal

Eric Carle's illustrations are stunning, as usual. This book has two stories happening at the same time. The firefly is trying to find some other firefly friends while the people and animals are heading somewhere else to see what all the noise is about. The people discover their surprise but the ending of this book makes it all worth it when you see how the firefly friends meet and all light up together. It works perfectly for the July 4th holiday!

While the story itself is nice enough, the ending will leave you in awe. In a world so consumed with tech, I was surprised at how magical I found this book.

Enjoyable and interesting story . This book is about " belonging " . Had some informative parts to it also about fireflies . One is , they aren't flies , but soft-bodied beetles . Plus they blink on and off in the night to attract other fireflies . And there are about 2000 species of fireflies in the world . Who knew !

My 2 year old enjoys this book. I also like the 'educational' element of the various types of light sources.

My Favorite Part was when the firefly found his friends and they all lit up.

One of Eric Carle's better books, using his usual illustration style, insect theme, and narrative technique of repetition--but not as effectively here as in his excellent "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".
