A young man awakens to selfhood and to a world of possibilities beyond the conventions of his upbringing in Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse’s beloved novel Demian. Emil Sinclair is a quiet boy drawn into a forbidden yet seductive realm of petty crime and defiance. His guide is his precocious, mysterious classmate Max Demian, who provokes in Emil a search for self-discovery and spiritual fulfillment. A brilliant psychological portrait, Demian is given new life in this translation, which together with James Franco’s personal and inspiring foreword will bring a new generation to Hesse’s widely influential coming-of-age novel.

Thank you, RM and BigHit, for introducing me to Demian... the Wings theories make so much sense now after reading the book, and a lot of fan theories are so far fetched haha... but, really, Demian is a good thought-provoking book, and it’s really interesting to see how Demian inspired many of BTS’s videos. Keep fighting Bangtan Boys and ARMY!!

"Demian" was a book that once I picked up, I did not want to put down. In every thought-provoking page, I discovered brand new perspectives on the world around us and within us, what it means to find ourselves, the nature of right and wrong, and so much more. As I read "Demian", I had a small, increasing sensation that in some way or another, this book was changing my life. Words fail me in trying to adequately describe this powerful novel, but I definitely recommend it! Begin reading with a truly open mind and see where it takes you.

I read this book a year ago and it was eloquent and enticing! This book truly allowed one to explore not only the story's contents, but one's inner self, experiencing aspects of the characters that one perhaps never knew lay within themselves or their past as a youth. It is quite thought-provoking and, at times, asks to be reflected upon. The writing is also beautifully and eloquently expressed, and it is definitely a novel one should read in their lifetime!

I love Demian. This is one of Hesse's greatest works, and thank you Ishida Sui, for bringing me to this book. Of course, I am also grateful that more well-know artists such as the K-POP group BTS has used Hesse's work as an inspiration (not sure if this is the right word). Thank you!

I love everything about this book. There were many moments I had to stop reading the book because of it's philosophical questions to ponder them myself. What's great was that one question would lead to another and I would be hungry for more answers. It's a satisfying desire. There is a theme of spiritualism that seems to relate to Gnosticism that I was never exposed to, but it did broaden my knowledge to it more through research. Would recommend to young adults :)

haha, it makes me so happy seeing so many armys here. I finally got around to reading this, and seeing the number of armys who have already read it makes me feel late :D

It may seem as a simple story in the beginning, but once you keep reading, the uniqueness of both the writing style and story starts showing and telling you that this novel of Youth is like no other.
