“So close to Paradise” is a early film shot in 1994 by Wang Xiaoshaui, but only approved by the Chinese authorities after changes made over a several year period. The film deals with the migration of farm workers to the cities and their near impossibility of making a decent living. Two of these workers, one doing hard physical labor, the other working in underground schemes to make money the easy way, get involved with a Vietnamese girl forced into prostitution by a mafia-type boss. After this years-long governmental censorship, Wang Xiaoshaui would go on to make several award-winning films (Cannes, Berlin, etc.) in the next decade after the release of this early film.
