Struggling writer Arturo Bandini is tormented by the tempestuous Camilla Lopez in this first novel from the most underrated writer from the 30's. See also 2006 film version with Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek.

I got my literary cherry popped with John Fante on this book. Hard to get into in the beginning, but once hooked I was all in. The characters are unforgettable, haunting and just downright sad by the end of the novel. Has had a lingering effect on me.

Had to read it after Charles Bukowski described John Fante as a god, and identified this as his best work. I prefer Bukowski, but this provided an interesting step back, as it is always interesting to read the works that have inspired your favourite authors.

Arturo Bandini is a young man who has moved to LA to begin a writing career that was launched with a short story. His promise seems to go unfulfilled and his stomach goes empty until he meets his muse, the darkly beautiful Camilla. Her mercurial manner ties him in knots and gives him more than enough to write about. In fact he becomes a novelist without seeming to even try; the words come that easy for him. In the end he does know where the inspiration comes from and chases that dream right up to a very heart rending conclusion. Although the writing style of this book is not my cup of tea, I did enjoy the story with its humor and descriptions of 1930''s Los Angeles.
