A remarkable film. I see it gets a great score on IMDB too (8.4). I especially liked the silence, or rather lack of music in a lot of the film. Scores in so many films are loud and intrusive.

“Le Trou” (The Hole), highly suspenseful, is one of the best prison break films and can be compared to “Escape from Alcatraz.” directed by the great action director, Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood. Both films are based on actual prison breaks and each methodically breaks down the various details of the break attempts and the obfuscations that the prisoners use to conceal their break. Jacques Becker is considered to be one of the greatest French directors of the black and white period.
