Author Jane Yolen and illustrator Vladimir Vagin make a great team. Two sets of illustrations accompany the text. At the top of each page is an illustration depicting Yolen's retelling of this Russian fairy tale. At the bottom of each page is a scene from the Stravinsky ballet The Firebird. In fact, it would be fun to read this book with a recording of Stravinsky's music playing in the background. Yolen is knowledgeable about Russian folklore and ballet, and it's interesting to read her note in the back of the book. She dedicates the book to ballerina Maria Tallchief.

Starpoem's standard fairytale warning: parts of this tale may be frightening for very young or sensitive readers.
