John Bryan's substantive revision to his original magnum opus published in 1989 — selected by the American Horticultural Society as one of the 75 great American gardening books— provides expanded coverage of some 230 genera and a staggering number of species, varieties, and cultivars. Genera are treated with detail appropriate to their importance, with information on history, classification, culture, propagation, pests and diseases, uses, and species and cultivars. Detailed encyclopedic plant listings are complemented by an equally comprehensive pictorial presentation. Not only are there more than 1100 color photographs — many showing the plants in their natural habitats — but there are also 43 color reproductions of botanical illustrations from 19th-century issues of Curtis's Botanical Magazine and other publications, taken from the author's extensive collection.

Book News
This reference for the professional and amateur gardener covers 230 genera of bulbous plants arising from corms, rhizomes and tubers. Drawing on about 50 years of horticultural experience, Bryan provides alphabetically-arranged entries that detail culture, pests and diseases, propagation, and a list of species. Many also contain some historical background such as the origin of the plant's name, or when it was introduced for use in gardens. In addition, some chapters address general use in the landscape and forcing bulbs, and appendices list bulbs as they are found in various countries, genera by flower color, flowering times, and an index of common names. New material in this revised edition includes changes in nomenclature, and new genera and species. Illustrated with 1100-plus color photographs of plants in their natural habitats as well as botanical illustrations from 19th-century issues of Curtis's Botanical Magazine and other publications.
