This rare exhibition (at the Met in 2002) awakened people's interest in an under-appreciated art form with its display of very big, very fine tapestries from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, each of which is beautifully reproduced here, with lots of details. The suitably grand catalogue of the show (it's 10.25x12.25<">) contains long essays on topics that include tapestry production and patronage in Northern Europe, France, and Italy; the rise of Brussels in the 15th and 16th centuries; Bernaert van Orley's transformation of tapestry design in Brussels; and the Acts of the Apostles tapestries and Raphael's cartoons. Campbell is a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
