The three volumes contain 400 signed essays written by an international cast of professionals some from within the zoo community and others from various related areas of academics, fieldwork, and science. The largest category of entries (146 essays) is made up of thorough profiles of particular zoos a representative international sampling. Ninety entries about animals comprise the next largest category. The rest of the essays are devoted to various themes, including biographical profiles, international and country-specific legislation, regional zoo associations, facilities and structures, conservation programs, and some of the institutional structures and jobs within modern zoos. In the interests of manageability and focus, aquariums were excluded from the scope. Black & white photos some full page, many smaller supplement the text. Annotation c.
