An extended meditation on how the aesthetics and style of rock music is defined. Moore (popular music, U. of Surrey, UK), focusing mostly on British rock, attempts to construct a musicology of rock that differs from established musicology in its recognition that rock has different purposes, publics, and aims, especially compared to classical music. He discusses how meaning, feeling, expression are mediated and critiques the rock "myths" of authenticity and unmediated expression, which are based on the ideological appropriation of the ethos and techniques of the blues. Turning his attention to the progressive rock of the 1970s, he argues that it was consistent of rock's rules and practices. Throughout, the concept of style is considered crucial to the rules and practices of rock music. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
