The artwork, at once troubling and touching, reflects the children's memories of the September tragedy and the fear, sadness, anger, and hope they felt. Accompanying the artwork in this book are essays by mental health experts, historians, artists, teachers, journalists, religious and political leaders, and others from across the New York metropolitan area. They discuss such varying topics as children's roles as witnesses to history, children's use of art as a means to express pain, the power of the artwork, and children's extraordinary ability to put their hearts and souls down on paper.
A collaboration by the New York University Child Study Center and the Museum of the City of New York presents seventy-five works by children ages five to eighteen, complemented by essays by prominent artists, writers, historians, and leaders.
