An excellent resource for the study of tales.
This companion to the authors' 1999 New Tales for Old presents contemporary reworkings of nine classic folktales and ballads written in ways likely to interest teenage readers. Intended as a resource for storytellers, librarians, teachers, and researchers, the work provides information on each tale's literary history and summarizes reworkings in various genre that the stories have inspired. Altmann (library and information studies, U. of Alberta) and de Vos (a storyteller and consultant) also suggest ways of exploring the stories' structure and possible meanings with students. The tales include Beauty and the Beast , Jack and his stories, the ballads "Tam Lin" and "Thomas the Rhymer," The Little Mermaid and The Wild Swans . Annotation c.
