Thrilling adventure story that reminds me of Richard Halliburton tales my grandmother would tell.

The story of Alexandra David-Neel's lifelong quest for adventure and her journey to Lhasa in 1924. She was born in 1868, a time when women did not travel freely, especially to such remote and restricted places as Tibet. The story is told simply, with lovely watercolor illustrations by Don Brown who is also the author. His story-telling skills lack the mysterious tension that such a story deserves, but the book is a wonderful introduction to both courageous women and a gentle introduction to Buddhism. A reading of David-Neel's Wikipedia entry before discussing it with children would be helpful. For ages 8 to 12 although I enjoyed it very much.
