Classic Melville film. It is a caper film (think The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, or Rififi) with some noir aspects and a very positive protagonist in Bob the Gambler. Though he is an addicted gambler, he sees himself as a sort of protector of those people he likes in his less than affluent section of Paris. Great location photography had to be an important influence on the New Wavers.

A classic film noir. Great plot and interesting characters. I believe this gave the idea for Ocean's Eleven.
