It's DS Logan McRae's first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn't get much worse. Four-year-old David Reid's body is discovered in a ditch, strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he's only the first. There's a killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood.
If that wasn't enough, Logan also has to contend with a new boss, DI Insch, who doesn't suffer fools gladly and thinks everyone's a fool, and his own ex-girlfriend, the beautiful but chilly Isobel MacAlister, who also happens to be the chief pathologist. The only good news is WPC 'Ball Breaker' Watson, Logan's new guardian angel.
The dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. If Logan isn't careful, he's going to end up joining them.

What can I say...it's Stuart MacBride. Smart, tightly plotted & laugh out funny.
Just as an aside to the person who went through the book with a pencil "correcting" the Scottish vernacular: people like me pick this up to read the AUTHOR'S words, not yours. Please either write your own book or buy a personal copy. Then you can grab a pencil & knock yourself out.

Excellent read. Plot holds. Mystery and intrigue. Couldn't wait to pick it up again.

Very well written story but lots of grim and graphic violence. In parts raw and gritty, mixed occasionally with touches of humour . Well developed characters and plot set in the cold miserable winter in Aberdeen. A glimpse into the human side of police officers trying to cope with and solve horrendous crimes.

Pretty standard mystery and detective type story similar to many others already written. One annoying feature for me was the number of UK or Scotish codes or letters making it sometimes difficult to read.

Good Aberdeen description and attempt to get the accent. Very trite plot.

First by this author, I enjoyed it and will read more.
Scottish detective - standard model of unruly, unconventional, yet successful. A dead child, more missing, maybe a serial killer. Of course, several suspects and sirprises.

Wonderful books filled with great story lines and sharp humour.

As someone said DI Steel is a national treasure of Scotland.
