Having been impressed by 'White Material', I ventured this. Some obsessions there appeared here as well, equally opaque to me in both instances, but more of a problem for me here. In a sense, both offer an opportunity to observe a character behaving as the end approaches, which applies to all of us. From the point of view of my interest, this one tried it in two ways. The only character who seems to matter much is our organ recipient. If he can be said to have a story it seems short on development; and this is a long movie. The Times Mr. Holden calls it a 'magnificent enigma', probably the best kind. He also says 'The best way to enjoy "The Intruder" is to surrender to its poetry without demanding cut-and-dried explanations." If I had seen this first, I probably would not have gone on to 'White Material'. If you have any love of dogs at all, there is some consolation. ** An afterthought: pondering the end of this, it came to me that I would, perhaps mistakenly, consider this a fable, much embroidered. It might very well be great art, but it is also my first candidate for a list I'd call, 'Films that annoyed me'.

If you decide to watch this film, you should do it when you can watch it undisturbed and when you have the conditions to focus. If you approach it nonchalantly, you will become hopelessly lost. Direct Claire Denis' works has been described as elliptical (difficult to follow?). There is a minimum of dialogue, which hides the motivations of the characters. The locations are multiple (French/Swiss border, Thailand, and Tahiti. There are scenes where you are not given enough information to enable you be certain what is going on. I suspect the director wants you to put in the extra effort to understand. The major theme of the film seems to be that the protagonist has an intense desire to know and love is long abandoned first son.

The DVD box said it was a brilliant film, but it did not register with me. I'd like to read more comments... maybe I was expecting too much.
