From the firm that produced The Urban Design Handbook comes a practical guide to developing and using pattern books-a tradition stretching back to Vitruvius and Palladio, and the source of many beautiful houses-to design neighborhoods today. It describes techniques and working methods for contemporary development and construction processes.
This manual documents the revival of the traditional architectural pattern book as a means of implementing urban design.

Book News
The creation of traditional neighborhoods in which individual houses fit together well with public spaces came about partly as the result of the use of architectural pattern books developed by architects and used by builders, according to the principals at Urban Design Associates, the architecture and urban design firm that put together this book. With this work, they seek to revive that practice, albeit in a modified form that recognizes the need of a shared vision, a clear definition of the character and form of public spaces, and well- proportioned and correctly styled architecture. They collect representative pages from their pattern books created for cities as diverse as Celebration, Florida; Norfolk, Virginia: and Yorkshire, England. The representative pages show how the pattern books offer guidance on the relationship between houses and public spaces and the elements appropriate to a range of architectural styles. The Architectural Pattern Book traces the precedents of twenty-first-century manuals from the Renaissance to Georgian and Parisian urban assembly kits and colonial American pattern books. It documents the revival of the traditional architectural pattern book as a means of implementing urban design in large-scale developments by describing techniques and working methods of preparing guides for current design and construction processes, and it shows exemplars that will serve as models for contemporary designers.
