The festivities at the annual Ferry Fair in 1923 are thrown into turmoil when the ubiquitous Burry Man, a pagan-dressed, whiskey-nipping character who routinely offends the stricter members of the community, from the minister to the temperance pamphleteer, falls dead from poisoning while handing out prizes.

Perseus Publishing
Summer 1923, and as the village of Queensferry prepares for the annual Ferry Fair and the walk of the Burry Man, feelings are running high. With his pagan greenery, his lucky pennies and the nips of whisky he is treated to wherever he goes, the Burry Man has much to offend stricter souls like the minister or temperance pamphleteer. And then at the Fair, in full view of everyone — including Dandy Gilver, invited to hand out the prizes — the Burry Man falls down dead. If he has been poisoned then the list of suspects includes anyone with a bottle of whisky in the house, and, here at Queensferry, that means just about everyone.

August 1923, and as the village of Queenferry prepares for the annual Ferry Fair and the walk of the Burry Man, feelings are running high. Between his pagan greenery, his lucky pennies and the nips of whiskey to which he is treated wherever he goes, the Burry Man has something to offend everyone, whether minister, priest or temperance pamphleteer. Then, on the eve of the fair, in full view of everyone - including Dandy Gilver, present at the festivities to hand out prizes - the Burry Man drops down dead.
Has he been poisoned? If so, the list of suspects must include anyone with a bottle of whisky in the house, and here in Queenferry, that means just about everyone.

Very well done - this is an undervalued series. The author leaves you with more than just a clever mystery (much of which the reader can figure out) - she provides a surprise twist at the end...
