I have not read the book and I imagine it would present some challenges in the way people talk today versus then. But the ideas are so timely and the divisions so familiar.
Some say Middlemarch was the most important novel every written ...
Terrific adaptation of great novel with characters with depth. I wish they made more like this today. Now the focus is more on sexing up things and adding gratuitous nudity, violence and dragons to interest knuckleheads who can't watch a show without crap like that.
So, I got another, functional, copy after reading the book and the story puts the truth to Melvin's observation: "I think of a man, and take away reason and accountability." One shallow useless, mindless female with wood shaving curls, and naught else, reminiscent of the modern sack of obesity with cellphone glued to her ear and thoughts only of getting her nails done, and the second mindless obesity marching in some useless cause trying to demonstrate that she has purpose and ability.
Glad I viewed the DVD after I read the book. It really helped me to keep the characters straight and see the major themes of the novel. The book can be challenging to read (I nearly gave up) but it is worth the effort.
Love and politics and costumes. Characteristic of an Andrew Davies adaptation, the love is played up, and the politics is played down, but this time he does justice to George Eliot's theme of social change. I recently read the novel, and had a hard time picturing anyone but Juliet Aubrey and Rufus Sewell in the lead roles. They can sum up pages of exposition with a word and a look. Patrick Malahide as Causabon is another standout (but not even listed in the catalog as a contributor, to which I say: booo, VPL!), not least because, without makeup, he makes himself look ugly, when in fact he is very handsome.

This is SUCH a great series. Wish it didn't have to end ......it was so fascinating to see this series based on George Eliot's novel. I highly recommend watching this...it's really good.
I didn't want this series to end.
Wonderful Andrew Davies adaptation with a scrumptious Rufus Sewell
Standing up well to a 2nd viewing too!
