GREAT 2006 4 CD compilation of LOTS of famous cuts by top talent players from 60's and 70's on Impulse Records. Heard most of this music back then - fun to hear it again - AND some new for me cuts.

"My music is the spiritual expression of what I am."-John Coltrane
Impulse Records wasn't around for very long, but its impact on jazz and other genres was seismic. It was committed to the more progressive and avant-garde side of jazz, led by the titanic figure of John Coltrane, who recorded some of his most influential music on the label. Even non-jazz listeners know Impulse for its iconic designs. It could accommodate more traditional musicians like Art Blakey and Gil Evans, a crooner like Johnny Hartman, and groundbreakers like Archie Shepp and Albert Ayer. This excellent 4-disc set includes tracks from all of those artists, as well as Ben Webster, McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane, and Earl Hines. Also check out the book of the same title by Ashley Kahn.

Possibly one of the most important Jazz cd's in the KCLS catalog. John Coltrane is considered a jazz legend and this collection gives you a sample of his greatest work. Coltrane is not easy to explain because he expressed himself so many ways in his music. The subtitle to the collection is "The Story of Impulse Records". Now John Coltrane was only one of many artists on the label, but he was one of the leaders of jazz for his generation. For Coltrane fans,, this is a must collection to hear!
